Every generation has its unique features. When it comes to millennials, those who were born between 1980 and 1997, one crucial thing we need to understand is that they have grown up in a very different, fast-paced environment compared to their managers and executives. That makes sense, since humans are wired to focus on the negative. This is evolution’s way of keeping us alive.

For CEOs and leaders running organizations, it’s important to acknowledge this natural negative lean and how it affects work culture. This is especially true when people in work organizations are constantly bombarded with problems to solve, roadblocks to remove and a never-ending set of tasks.

Leaders: intentionally create a positive organization or have a negative one by default.

Nicholas Wyman, CEO of the Institute of Workplace Skills and Innovation, recently published an article with CNBC discussing the disconnect between the number of unemployed, underemployed and unfulfilled jobs in the US. He says that our nation is facing a “grave” problem.

Why is there a disconnect? There are not enough people with the practical skills that are required for the unfulfilled job openings. Wyman says, “It’s Time to Skill Up, America!” So now what?

Reinvent Your Onboarding Process

Posted By Editor, Laurie, Tuesday, January 9, 2018

At Cirrus Logic, ranked eighth on the 2015 Great Place to Work® Best Medium Workplaces list, new hires are immersed in a culture camp called the School of Cirrus Rocks. At the camp, participants first learn about company values through storytelling. They then break into groups and create a story in the form of a song about working at the company. Later, they meet at a local bar with local musicians to perform their songs and get cheered on by their teams and supervisors.

While many organizations prefer more structure to onboarding programs, others follow a sink-or-swim approach, where new employees must figure out on their own what the team and the organization expects from them. Whatever form onboarding takes in your workplace, it is one of the most important contributions a hiring manager or HR professional can make to talent retention, employee engagement and organizational performance.

What Is Onboarding and Why Does It Matter?  Continue reading on the HR West Blog.
