Is It Enough that Your Company Has an Open-Door Policy?

At almost every job I have ever had, I was told during orientation or in the handbook that HR (and in some cases, management) had an open-door policy. And yes, the policies that I wrote as an HR professional contained that verbiage as well. But what does it mean? 

It is time to ask ourselves if our open-door policies are enough to drive the type of change we need to see in our organizations?

5 Ways to Improve Your Talent Attraction Strategy

Nicholas Wyman, CEO of the Institute of Workplace Skills and Innovation, recently published an article with CNBC discussing the disconnect between the number of unemployed, underemployed and unfulfilled jobs in the US. He says that our nation is facing a “grave” problem.

Why is there a disconnect? There are not enough people with the practical skills that are required for the unfulfilled job openings. Wyman says, “It’s Time to Skill Up, America!” So now what?

For the first time in a long time, with low unemployment rates and rising hiring needs, we are faced with a candidate-driven market. Everyone is competing for top talent and passive job seekers are golden.

An Invitation to Empathy …one year later

Last November, I sat in a living room with 10 people of diverse viewpoints sharing their hearts. They talked openly about their struggles and fears. Tricia and I were invited to facilitate the discussion, but we cried right along with them.

I wish you could have been there. My heart was filled with hope watching these people build connection with each other from love, even when they knew they didn’t agree on everything.

Healthy relationships and communities are built on speaking and listening well. I believe the events of the last year are an opportunity for all of us to do this together.  Right now, some of our deepest beliefs and anxieties are coming to the surface.
